More About Whitby Health Centre

The Oshawa Clinic Group (OCG) is one of Canada’s largest private multidisciplinary medical group practices. OGC, which had been established in a downtown Oshawa location since 1984, identified a need for an innovative new facility in Whitby, ON. The new facility includes an urgent care clinic, a pharmacy, diagnostic imaging, laboratory services, and non-acute healthcare services for cardiology, physiotherapy, fertility, audiology, dental care, sleep assessments, and psychological support.

The new-build facility is comprised of four-storeys plus one-storey below grade, organized into two wings with a central reception and circulation space and extended at-grade facilities. The clinic is the largest fully accessible medical office building in Durham Region, and accommodates a duplex elevator and a service elevator, along with a central Communication Stair that rises from the basement to the top floor. Interiors included custom millwork, high-end finishes, and carefully detailed integrated lighting throughout.

J.J. McGuire was Construction Manager for the project, working closely with OCG and the design team from the earliest stages to meet the compressed timeline for completion, which aligned with the closing of their Oshawa facility. The project was initially planned for delivery in one phase, however due to unexpected site challenges and disruptions to labour and supply chain disruptions, the project was divided into multiple phases to accommodate delivery timelines with OCG’s occupancy dates. J.J. McGuire’s team provided extensive and on-going resequencing and coordination of the work to deliver the project in phases at accelerated timelines. Close collaboration with trade partners to adjust and increase work forces, deliveries, materials staging and work areas, as well as planning to accommodate multiple trades working simultaneously in condensed spaces, over various floors, and on different phases enabled the team to deliver to facility in time for the client to relocate their operations and maintain vital medical services.
