More About TTC Lansdowne Station Renovation

Lansdowne Subway Station is an underground station on TTC’s Line 2 that was originally constructed in the 1970’s. The 3-level station has three street-level access points, with its main entrance near Lansdowne Ave & Bloor St, within a mature, mixed-use neighbourhood. As part of the TTC’s modernization program, the station required significant upgrades to accommodate full accessibility (Easier Access) including the renovation of the existing entrance and addition of three new elevators.

J.J. McGuire was engaged by TTC to provide construction services for the complex renovation. The project included the installation of new elevator shafts and elevator mechanical spaces for three new elevators – one from street level to concourse, and two from concourse to track level. The project also included new automatic sliding doors, new canopy, and curtainwall at the main entrance, new HVAC systems, fire alarms, and sprinkler system throughout the station, and upgrades to all interior station finishes including flooring, ceilings, and walls.

The 14m new elevator shafts on both sides of the station resulted in a complex delivery process. Due to the extensive shoring, caisson walls, and jet grouting, the project sequencing required significant adjustments once the work was underway, resulting in the project being converted into a multi-phase delivery. J.J. McGuire adjusted the delivery approach to enable the north-side work to continue on schedule while the south-side work was delayed to accommodate a significant redesign of the shoring. The south shaft was equipped with monitor points on the building once work restarted, and additional work was undertaken to ensure existing building components were restored. The J.J. McGuire team also worked closely with TTC to obtain phased occupancy once the north-side was complete, allowing work to continue on the south phase.
