More About Ironworkers Local 721 Training Centre

Ironworkers Local 721 provides training and skills upgrades for apprentices and union members throughout Southern Ontario. Serving more than 4,000 members from Oakville to Belleville and beyond, Local 721 required an extensive expansion and modernization to their Training Centre in the west-end of Toronto. The new state-of-the-art Training Centre is the largest of 15 centres across Canada and provides areas for practical training, teaching classrooms, and administrative areas to support Local 721 operations.

J.J. McGuire was engaged as the constructor for the expansion and renovation project. The three-storey anodized aluminum and glass panel building, along with associated warehouse areas, includes workshops for welding, burning and rigging training, machine shops, three classrooms, 16-station computer lab, auditorium, boardroom, as well as reception, administrative and dispatch areas. Workshops are connected with outdoor material storage areas through rolling overhead doors and a two-ton overhead gantry crane allows for movement of large material. The site includes parking at the front and rear, and a secure area for practical training – a five-storey high mock-up of a structural steel building that is torn down and put up with every apprentice class.
