More About Fleming College Haliburton Campus

Fleming College’s new student residence brings vital and affordable student housing to the College’s Haliburton School of Art and Design. Developed as a combined community and college initiative, the project is located with Haliburton’s Glebe Park. The new residence features 27 units in two stand-alone, side-by-side, three-storey pavilions. Each pavilion includes one- and two-bedroom suites with shared kitchenette and ensuite as well as a lobby and laundry room and other common spaces.

The engineered wood-frame building features a sloped metal roof with faux wood-panel exterior. The side-by-side pavilions are designed to be identical, with exterior detailing required to be mirrored between the two buildings. To achieve this important architectural element, J.J. McGuire worked closely with the trades to plan and undertake daily review of installation, ensuring that the detailing was vertically aligned and consistent with the design intent.

J.J. McGuire worked with the client as General Contractor for the project. The team provided value-add services, including assisting the College with a significant 3-month value-engineering exercise (after tender to help align the project with available funding), and extensive logistics planning to maintain the project’s aggressive schedule. J.J. McGuire led coordination and planning for multiple, concurrent trades working on the two pavilions simultaneously. The activities of more than 40 workers from multiple trades were managed on site, with immediate access to pre-purchased materials, staged & secured on site allowing for minimal delays. The location of the site, within a public park, also required extensive safety planning to maintain safe access to pathways, roadways, and other public spaces during construction.
