More About DDSB — Mary Street Community School Addition

Mary Street Community School, a part of the Durham District School Board, serves Kindergarten to Grade 8 students in Downtown Oshawa. Located near Bond and Simcoe Sts, the area had undergone significant growth since the school’s current facility was constructed in 1988, and a new addition was required to accommodate the additional enrolment and replace the port-a-pak that had been installed on the site as a temporary measure.

J.J. McGuire was engaged as General Contractor for the new 12,000 sq.ft. one-storey addition. Renovations to the existing school were required to accommodate the new addition, and demolition of the existing port-a-pak and site work were included in the scope. The existing school remained operational throughout a significant portion of the project, which necessitated strict safety and site security measures to ensure safety for students and teachers. Additionally, sequencing and staging for the project were carefully planned to ensure minimal disruption to the operational educational environment.
The new addition, capable of housing 190 students in a state-of-the-art facility that will enhance learning, was completed on schedule to accommodate the opening of the 2024-25 school year.
